The importance of dental hygiene

Tooth decay and gum diseases are some of the most common health issues faced by average Papua New Guineans, but unfortunately, this branch of medicine continues to remain very undeveloped in PNG.

A worrying situation, especially considering that the country’s overall health sector has one of the lowest standards in the South Pacific and beyond. With that concept in mind, Paradise Private Hospital has decided to launch its own dental clinic, located on the same premises as the hospital.

“The idea is to provide a one stop shop for our patients,” says Dr. Emily Gabi, a dentist with many years of experience in Papua New Guinea. “Should a patient need the hospital for any additional check-up or if their cases present particular difficulties, we can always count on the hospital’s staff to back us up and that’s a great advantage” she continues.

“Unfortunately, oral health has historically been placed at the bottom of the administrations’ priorities in PNG, but I don’t think this should be the case,” says Dr. Robin Sios, the founder and current CEO of the Paradise Private Hospital.

To compensate for this shortness of foresight, he struck a partnership with Dr. Naysan Hamadani from Mills Dental Care in Port Moresby, who boasts more than three decades of experience in the field, both in PNG and internationally.

“We will be offering ‘Peer-peer’ support to the PPH Dental clinic, as continuing professional development is one of the biggest challenges in Papua New Guinea,” says Dr. Naysan. “It’s a collaborative partnership to raise the standard of care in PNG in general”, he continues.

While the PPH Dental Clinic boasts state-of-the-art facilities to provide general dentistry, such as fillings, ,cleaning or root canal therapy, just to name a few, in case of more sophisticated procedures the PPH Dental Clinic can count on the experience of Dr. Naysan and his team, for more advanced dentistry, such as Implant or orthodontics.

With the facility already operational, a strategic alliance with Mills Dental Care and one of the best locations in town, the PPH Dental Clinic is ready to serve a wide range of patients, proud of being a national institution to serve Papua New Guineans and provide a bigger smile in their lives.
