Barium Enema Studies – Now Available at PPH

Paradise Private Hospital continues to expand its diagnostic imaging capabilities with the introduction of Barium Enema studies. The first procedure was successfully performed in February by Dr. James Kennedy (Senior General Surgeon & Paediatric Surgeon) and the PPH Radiology Team on an 8-year-old male patient this year, 2026.

Paradise Private Hospital recently welcomed Dr. Kennedy James as the hospital’s full-time Surgeon.

Dr. Kennedy is highly skilled in both General and Pediatric Surgery, with specialized expertise in the treatment of Hirschsprung’s Disease, a serious congenital intestinal condition affecting children.

Through extensive international specialist training and mentorship under pioneers of pediatric surgery in Papua New Guinea, Dr. Kennedy is qualified to perform single-stage corrective surgery.

With a proven track record of successfully performing these complex procedures in Papua New Guinea, Dr. Kennedy is passionate about advancing pediatric surgical care.

What is a Barium Enema?

A Barium Enema is a specialized X-ray examination used to assess the large intestine (colon) and rectum. The test uses a white contrast liquid called barium, which coats the lining of the colon and allows doctors to clearly see the structure of the intestine on X-ray images.

Procedure

During the examination:

• Barium contrast is inserted into the rectum through a small tube
• A series of X-ray images are taken to view the colon
• In some cases, a small amount of air may be introduced to expand the colon for clearer imaging
• Patients may experience mild cramping or a temporary urge to use the bathroom during the procedure

• Abdominal (belly) pain
• Chronic constipation
• Rectal bleeding
• Inflammation of the colon
• Possible tumors or structural abnormalities in the colon
